Con el corazón destrozado les comunico que mi padre, Luis Mariano Santafé, falleció hoy en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos del Alfred Hospital, en Melbourne, Australia.
Él y mi mamá viajaron desde Colombia para visitarme, después de casí 12 años que llevo aquí en Australia. Era la primera vez que venian al país. Lo que iba a ser un viaje de ensueño se convirtió en la batalla más dura de nuestras vidas.
Mi papá luchó hasta el final. Partió hoy con mi mamá y conmigo tomándole la mano.
El 25 de mayo de 2026 lo llevé a urgencias. A la mañana siguiente ingresó a UCI. Su seguro de viaje venció el 4 de junio y la aseguradora se negó a renovar la cobertura, incluso con certificados médicos del Hospital que confirmaban que no estaba en condiciones de volar ni de recibir el alta.
Hace unos días la aseguradora alegó que su enfermedad era "preexistente" y solo pagará 13,000 AUD. Un día en UCI cuesta más de 10,000 AUD, y mi papá estuvo 19 días.
Hoy enfrento una deuda hospitalaria imposible de pagar, además de los gastos de cremación y repatriación de sus cenizas a Colombia.

With a broken heart, I share that my father, Luis Mariano Santafe, passed away today in the Intensive Care Unit at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne.
He and my mum travelled all the way from Colombia to visit me, their only daughter, here in Australia, for the first time in 12 years. What was meant to be a dream trip turned into the hardest battle of our lives.
My dad fought until the very end. He passed away today with Mum and I holding his hands.
On 25 May 2026, I took Dad to the ER. The next morning he was admitted to ICU. His travel insurance expired on 4 June and refused to extend coverage, even with medical certificates from The Alfred proving he was not fit to fly or be discharged.
Just a few days ago, the insurance company claimed his illness was "pre-existing" and will only pay AUD $13,000. One day in ICU costs over $10,000, and Dad was in ICU for 19 days.
As a result, I am left with an impossible hospital debt, plus cremation costs, plus the cost to bring my dad home to Colombia.
